As the EU transport sector moves toward decarbonisation, Safe and Secure Parking Areas (SSPAs) are emerging as key facilitators of the energy transition. Green SSPAs support the delivery of multiple energy solutions — from electric charging infrastructure to hydrogen refuelling — enabling fleets to shift toward zero- and low-emission vehicles. Beyond providing charging services, SSPAs can integrate on-site energy storage, such as batteries, to enhance resilience, optimise energy use, and improve operational efficiency. In this context, the Voluntary Green Truck Parking Standard, launched this year by ESPORG, fits seamlessly into the supply chain ecosystem of renewable and sustainable energy and actively supports the transition to cleaner road transport.

On 4 March 2026, ESPORG will bring together policymakers, industry partners and parking operators in Brussels for an exclusive workshop dedicated to one of the most pressing challenges facing transport and logistics today: the energy transition. ESPORG workshop “Energy Transition – Green Parking Standard” will explore how Europe can move from ambition to implementation when it comes to sustainable parking infrastructure for heavy-duty vehicles.

From policy to practice

The workshop will open with a welcome from Dirk Penasse, ESPORG General Manager, followed by a keynote address from Filip-Alexandru Negreanu-Arboreanu, Deputy Head of Unit for Road Transport DG MOVE, setting the policy scene on Europe’s energy transition in road transport.

ESPORG will then provide a strategic perspective on AFIF and AFIR, highlighting how European funding and regulation can accelerate the deployment of alternative fuels and clean infrastructure at parking areas.

Energy transition: where do we stand, and where do we want to go?

The objective of this panel discussion is to take stock of the progress made on the path to greening and decarbonisation, and to discuss the role and place of safe and secure parking areas in the process and their contribution to decarbonisation

The panel will bring together industry voices shaping the transition – representatives from energy providers, logistics, fleet operators, and shippers, including EDF, Moeve, Milence, European Road Haulers Association – UETR and the European Shippers’ Council.

Industry takes the lead – the green parking standards

The second part of the workshop will shift the spotlight to the key role of green parking areas as facilitators for energy transition. ESPORG will officially present the Green Parking Standard, a concrete framework designed to support the decarbonisation of truck parking areas while maintaining safety, security, and operational efficiency.

DEKRA will present the standard in detail, including the certification process and practical requirements for parking operators. This session will offer clear guidance on how sustainability goals can be translated into measurable, certifiable action on the ground .

Green parking leaders and certification ceremony

To bring the Green parking standard to life, first green pilot parking operators from across Europe—including Romania, France, Spain and Denmark—will share their experiences, lessons learned, and expectations for the future. The workshop will conclude with the official handover of the first Green Parking Certificates, marking an important milestone for sustainable transport and logistics.

By combining EU policy insights, industry leadership, and concrete certification tools, the ESPORG workshop aims to move the conversation beyond theory. It sends a clear message: the energy transition of truck parking is not optional—it is already underway.

For parking operators, policymakers and industry partners alike, this event promises valuable insights into how Europe can build a greener, more resilient parking network.
