As the year draws to a close, at ESPORG we reflect on 2024 as a year of progress and challenges in the transportation sector. While sustainability continued to take center stage, the economic landscape reminded us of the pressing need for resilience and innovation.

One of the defining trends in 2024 was the accelerating shift toward electrification in commercial and industrial transport. Across Europe, equipment manufacturers (OEMs) showcased advancements in electric drivetrains, battery technology, and smart charging infrastructure, making significant strides toward a more sustainable transportation future. However, sustainability extended beyond vehicles, encompassing the entire supply chain. Innovations in battery recycling and sustainable material sourcing reflected a growing focus on creating a cleaner, more ethical transport ecosystem.

Transport remains a cornerstone of Europe’s economy, with 1.3 million public and private companies employing over 10 million people and ensuring the seamless movement of goods and services across the EU.  Yet, 2024 posed significant challenges for the European transport and logistics sector.

In this context, ESPORG remained steadfast in its mission to enhance safety, security, and efficiency in European transport. In 2024, we focused on creating a robust network of safe and efficient truck parks, which are increasingly vital to the interconnected supply chain.

ESPORG’s efforts aimed to transform traditional parking areas into Smart Service Hubs, elevating safety standards for cargo and drivers alike. By combining innovation with collaboration, ESPORG is helping ensure the seamless flow of goods across road, air, and water transport.

A significant highlight of the year was ESPORG’s partnership with Panteia and TIS to finalize the “Study on the availability of suitable rest facilities for professional drivers and secured parking facilities”, commissioned by DG MOVE. The study, set to be officially published in March 2024, represents a cornerstone for advancing safe and secure parking facilities in the EU.
