Brussels, 13 January 2026

ESPORG, the European Organisation for Safe and Secure Truck Parking Areas, has launched the Voluntary Green Truck Parking Standard and a new voluntary certification scheme to audit and certify safe and secure truck parking areas in Europe, to ascertain their green credentials.

Developed in close partnership with DEKRA and ESPORG members, the new standard builds on the existing EU Safe and Secure Truck Parking Area (SSTPA) Standard by adding a comprehensive sustainability layer. It enables truck parking operators to establish, improve, demonstrate and monitor their contribution to greener, more sustainable road freight transport.

Eight leading parking operators from four European Countries have already been audited and ranked into one of the four green standard criteria, demonstrating the sector’s readiness to engage in the green transition: Eurotunnel (FR), Smart Autohof (RO), On Turtle (ES), Delta Park (FR), Truck Arena (FR), Recharge City (DK), Truck Etape Béziers (FR) and Mowiz Astigarraga (ES).

Driving Sustainable Truck Parking Across Europe

The objective of this new voluntary industry standard is to encourage and improve green parking management, speed up the greening of the truck parking sector in Europe, and contribute to society’s efforts to reduce its impact on environment.

Dirk Penasse, ESPORG’s General Manager, said: “We are making this bold move together with our members and partners from DEKRA with the objective to get the whole industry to a new level of service quality and respect of environment, which only the best among us have reached. We expect to double and potentially even triple the number of green-certified truck parking areas in Europe in the next two years, opening the road for the entire sector to improve and get the recognition, including among regional authorities, of its green credentials.”

Four levels of green parking

The green standard has four levels and applicants are evaluated according to established criteria (see more here), to which dedicated points have been allocated. To reach the first level, candidate-parkings have toobtain  between 20 and 34 points, out of 75 in total. To qualify for the second level, candidates have to obtain between 35 and 49 points; obtaining between 50 and 59 classifies the parking in the second best level, whilst above 60 points parkings are ranked best in the class.

Based on the total score achieved, certified parkings are awarded one of four levels, symbolised by green “leaves”:

  • Level One – Green Parking (20–34 points)
  • Level Two – Advanced Green Parking (35–49 points)
  • Level Three – Accomplished Green Parking (50–59 points)
  • Level Four – Excellent Master Green Parking (60–75 points)

Peter Paul Ruschin, Head of Sustainability Services at DEKRA Assurance Services GmbH, said: “Truck parking areas represent a largely untapped potential — not only because of their essential role in heavy-duty transport infrastructure, but also due to the space and opportunities they offer for sustainable development. With this standard, we aim to encourage progress and provide clear guidance for those striving to advance sustainability in transport and logistics.”

The relevance of the new certification is already demonstrated by early adopters across Europe. For reminder, Mowiz Astigarraga (Spain) was unanimously selected as the winner of the Green Truck Parking Management Award 2025, highlighting best practice and leadership in sustainable truck parking management.
